I was having a discussion with a few professional poker colleagues the other day about the best way to reach the now famous SuperNova Elite status on PokerStars.
This is the highest status on that site and involves the acquiring of FPP and VPP (frequent player points). Firstly you need to be able to play a very large number of tables. But this is no mean feat in itself and requires a certain type of strategy to be able to accomplish this.
If you set out to play 16 tables or more than you can really only achieve this by altering your game play to compensate for the fact that you are playing more tables.
The Normal Poker Play
For example let us say that your normal play is to call a lot of raises with speculative hands and you like to see a lot of flops. This is a very dangerous strategy to employ when you are playing so many tables because you are going to end up playing far more post flop hands than you can possibly handle.
The real complexity of no limit deep stack ring games is really only apparent when you see complex post flop situations. So what this actually means is that you are far better off playing a no flop style of play.
This means if someone raises then you are far better of re-raising than calling. Let us say that you have A-J in late position and a middle position player raises. If you decide to play the hand then you should re-raise even though your hand may be dominated.
A Multi-Table Style
If your opponent folds then you win the pot without a flop which is good when you are playing so many tables. Secondly you can also take the initiative in the hand because your opponent may have A-Q but if you both miss the flop then further aggression by you will take it down.
If your opponent four bets you then you can simply fold and once again your decisions are automatic. The key to playing a large number of tables is to try and automate your decisions as much as possible.
As always the key in online poker success isn’t in finding a way to win but to make sure that the way that you have found is continually being executed all the time.
Variance is perhaps your single biggest enemy as an online poker player and will be ultimately responsible for why millions of possible winning players fail to make money.
