In full ring NLHE Just what is a weak-tight poker game? Well it is a game where the players play tight-aggressive poker but in a predictable way.
This is usually seen more in full ring than six handed games although there are certainly weak-tight games in six max as well. What usually makes a player weak-tight is a combination of factors. Players aiming for rakeback is one such reason and multi-tabling is another when these people play online poker.
Also the very nature of the person that selects full ring games over six handed ones is indicative of someone who desires to fold more and have less blind pressure. So in my opinion then a player who is looking to play full ring is more prone to becoming weak-tight than a six handed player.
Classifying Poker Games
The full name of a weak-tight player could be a “weak-tight aggressive”. Millions of online poker players play poker in the belief that they are playing good poker when they play tight-aggressive.
This really only applies if you are playing against very weak opponents in very low stakes games that are playing with deep stacks and who are making consistent errors.
In fact this type of player was prevalent in NLHE cash games some years ago when online NLHE was a new game. But then players smartened up and suddenly the pure tight-aggressive strategy was nowhere near as effective.
A tight-aggressive strategy used as a stand-alone way of playing is simply not going to work as well as it once did. In fact I would say now that in full ring games that the optimal style is “tight-aggressive with adjustments”. This means that adjusting to your opponents is still as essential as it always has been.
The Key Table Dynamic
So just how should we adjust to weak-tight opponents in full ring games? Well firstly these players are weak because they simply fold too much in small and medium small pots.
They allow themselves to be pushed around in the pursuit of waiting for some “fish” to give them 100bb in a big pot when they have the nuts or close to it.
They little realise that it is they that are the “fish” for sitting and waiting for this to happen. So you need to attack players more in full ring and especially under certain situations.
These are when players limp, when you have position and when they are either attacking the blinds or responding to you doing it. This is precisely what I meant when I said that the optimal style is now “tight-aggressive with adjustments”.
