The Chips are up at Poker Tutor! Online Gaming Site Turns Ordinary Folk into High Rollers

February 07, 2005 - Press Dispensary - Bored with the humdrum realities of life? Don’t let the chips get you down! Thanks to Poker Tutor (http://www.pokertutor.co.uk), a gaming tuition site set up by Dartmouth-based poker success story Dan Mason, you too can join the world of the glamorous high rollers – and there’s no need to venture to Las Vegas to learn the necessary skills!

Aimed at players of all abilities, Poker Tutor offers guidance at any level and type of Texas Hold’em, which is the most popular form of poker in the world today. Complete beginners are helped through the jargon and given the information they need to start playing proficiently.

Those with intermediate experience learn what hands to play and how to play them successfully, gain help with strategies for multi-table and single-table tournaments, and can try their hand at the more challenging Omaha and Stud poker. Accomplished players can receive advice on how to qualify for the World Poker Tour and World Series of Poker events. The advice is personalised and given by real professionals.

All members benefit from Poker Tutor’s chat room, message forum, tournament news, list of recommended books for players of different abilities and friendly community feel. To join the site, they simply need to fill in an online registration form.

Poker Tutor can set up private games between its players – although no money is wagered through the site itself. Any betting takes place on the leading gaming sites, Party Poker (http://www.partypoker.com) and Ultimate Bet (http://www.ultimatebet.com), with which Poker Tutor has set up deals. As Poker Tutor gains referral fees from games played by its members on the two sites, its tuition and advice services remain free of charge.

Dan Mason, 26, makes a living playing online poker from his Devon home. He decided to set up Poker Tutor after realising the game can be fully explored without any travel and has wide appeal. According to the Poker Britain report from Ladbrokespoker.com, 13 million UK adults have poker experience, women's gambling habits online are increasing and they are proving to be better players than men. Furthermore, last year Britons bet 3.5 billion pounds online and a quarter of those registering for internet accounts were women.

Dan comments: ‘Online gaming is one of the fastest growing internet leisure sectors in the UK. The latest research from Nielsen shows that the typical net gambler is a middle-aged housewife logging on for an afternoon game! Poker Tutor was an obvious choice for me, as most of the newcomers need expert help in how to get started and how to play well; and that’s where we come in!’

Notes for editors
Poker Tutor was established in 2003 by Dan Mason and Miles Thomas, who are based in Dartmouth and Bristol respectively. Dan first became involved with poker in 1999 when he was working as an engineer with a large optoelectronics company and had a significant disposable income. He was then made redundant and decided to attend university to learn new skills. Meanwhile, he realised there was money to be made through online poker and taught himself to play using books and online resources. After a few months, he was earning so much from poker that he left university to focus on the game full-time.

Dan plays to qualify for tournaments on luxurious cruise ships in the Caribbean where he can pit his skills against other online players face-to-face. This spring, he heads to the Gulf of Mexico to join 750 world-wide players for the biggest ever limit Texas Hold’em tournament, which has a 7.5 million (US dollars) prize pool including first prize of 1.8 million (US dollars).
