Luck in Tournament Poker
publication date: Aug 2, 2008
Everyday online and live I hear players complaining about about their bad luck. Most players know these days know about variance and whilst it is still annoying to be sucked out on it is all part of the game and has to happen. The game would not be the same if the losers lost and the winners won, however this is what many players wish for. I have always tried to look at this differently. Try picking out your top 5 tournament finishes. It does not matter if there freeroll's and $5 tournaments or all $10,000 buy-in events. The luck factor in poker as far as I'm concerned happens here where it matters. Only in the very top games of your lifetime can you truly quantify if you have been lucky or not because you are looking at such a small sample range. Even then bad luck can be confused with bad play so most will feel they are on the losing end. To sum up, don't feel too bad when your AA get beaten after it was all in pre-flop in a $5 tournament when your next game is has a $1,000 buy-in. Maybe the Poker Gods will now look upon you favourably!............if only the law of averages actually worked this way ;) Anyway, check out some of the worst bad beats in some of the biggest tournaments HERE
